Problem :

Current autism apps are too simple in design and lack visual engagement. They often use unclear icons and graphics, which discourages children with autism from using them. This leads to ineffective communication between children and caregivers, limiting developmental progress.

Challenge :

  • Creating a UI that balances fun engagement and therapeutic purpose.

  • Ensuring clarity and accessibility for both children and caregivers.

  • Maintaining long-term user interest without overstimulation.

  • Integrating evidence-based therapy principles into an intuitive digital interface.

Solution :

Design a safe, supportive, and engaging app for children with autism that uses vibrant visuals, interactive activities, and customizable interventions.

The app will promote communication, sensory regulation, emotional expression, and social interaction through a child-friendly interface featuring bright colors and animated spinning cards.
It also aims to support therapists & caregivers by providing observation tools and interactive feedback mechanisms.

User Research

1. Simplicity and Clarity
  • Users preferred a minimal animation environment to prevent overstimulation.

  • Clear and consistent iconography was essential for maintaining focus and comprehension.

2. Interactive Learning
  • Activities involving problem-solving, sentence construction, and verbal interaction encouraged participation and skill development.

  • Incorporating a reading-aloud system & speech interaction helped children strengthen communication and pronunciation.

3. Motivation and Engagement
  • Participants responded positively to reward-based systems such as badges, stars, or praise animations.

  • Features like preference selection (favorite themes or characters) increased long-term motivation and ownership of learning progress.

4. Personalization
  • Therapists emphasized the need for customization options — adjusting difficulty levels, selecting visual styles, or tailoring lesson types based on each child’s progress.

  • Personalized prompts and adaptable content ensured inclusivity for children at varying developmental stages.

5. Social and Real-World Connection
  • Adding social interaction features (e.g., cooperative play or communication tools) supports the development of empathy and social understanding.

  • Real-world application scenarios such as grocery shopping or daily routines help children generalize learned behaviors beyond the app.

Design Process

Summary :

This project focuses on building an interactive autism-support app for children aged 5–12 that encourages learning and connection through visual storytelling and play-based interaction.
By combining UX research, user-friendly UI, and therapeutic design, the goal is to enhance the quality of life for children with autism and strengthen communication with their caregivers.
